The rooms were amazing: very large (for anywhere, not just Japan!), beds were fantastic, the little enclosed patio area where your own private onsen bath was, was lovely. It's located up in the hills of Beppu, so not walking distance to town, but, it's very serene, has great views of the town, ocean below and steam coming out of the mountain around you. I'd personally prefer to stay up in the mountains than in Beppu town. The hotel has a shuttle to take you down to town in the morning, and it's a short taxi ride otherwise (10 min from the station). We took the shuttle to the station in the morning, stored our bags in the luggage lockers there, and caught the bus from there to see the various Hells. Go visit the tourism info center and see the very helpful staff there! They'll get you all the bus schedules you need for Beppu and also onwards - i found that it was hard to find this info online beforehand. If of interest, we decided to do the Hells on our own with the city bus, and got the unlimited day pass for 1000 yen and found it all very easy to figure out with the maps and schedules from the tourism info center staff. Back to the hotel - the property itself is beautiful - it blends into the landscape, and they've taken a lot of care with the architecture and design. Dinner was excellent - the grilled vegetable platter and mushroom platter was perfectly cooked, the service was great and the views were lovely. Breakfast is a mix of Japanese and Western, but all good and filling. Finally, as those who are #glutenfree and #celiac know, eating in Japan isn't the easiest but Galleria Midobaru was able to do dinner and breakfast 100% gluten free (and where i felt safe) which was amazing (and it was good!) I had good contact with the hotel in advance on it all. A final special mention to staff member Maria for her support before and during our stay - it was very much appreciated!

Absolutely incredible hotel. I've stayed at a lot of places in Japan during my travels and 1.5 years I lived there, and I can easily say this is the nicest and best hotel I've ever stayed at in Japan. It's a modern art experience + luxury hotel. The architecture is so interesting and there's modern art from local Japanese artists all throughout the hotel and in each room. They even offer art tours (in Japanese). The aesthetic was immaculate! The staff were very nice and all had a uniform that made them look like they were out of the matrix. They showed me an intro video during check-in in English so I was fully aware of how to cool down the onsen in our room and what all the amenities were. The room was INCREDIBLE. The largest I've ever had. The bed was HUGE. I'm 173cm and I could fully lay out sideways and was still perfectly on the bed. The view was great! The personal Onsen was great and is carved out of a single piece of granite, which was so smooth and satisfying ❤️ you get a free drink at the bar once you arrive (I got local grape juice). The staff were very nice and helpful, but just know you'll need to speak to them in Japanese. I also got a massage which was like $60 for 60 mins which was great! They come to your room and give you a massage there, so you don't even need to leave the comfort of your room. Absolutely fantastic! Will 100% be staying here again.

We stayed four nights at the Midobaru. We were greeted by Maria, who spoke excellent English and was extremely professional as was the rest of the staff. Room was spacious, modern, with a balcony overlooking the slope and the Beppu area, and had a private onsen bath. The view from the room is truly breathtaking. The hotel is nicely decorated and has a free-flow sense between the floors and the rooms. There is available free parking with limited places. A minor glitch with the duvet cover was immediately taken care of and replaced. The breakfast was extremely rich, with various cooked options and the staff very professional and attentive. On a more personal note I would like to thank the gentleman at the breakfast area who so graciously wrote a welcome message on his Smartphone and translated it into Greek. It was so very moving. A small suggestion for the breakfast: a plate of seasonal fruits would be nice for those wishing to have a lighter breakfast

Really enjoyed this unique hotel that has a mix of art, onsen, great views and decent food. The room (419) was not luxurious but was well designed, the balcony overlooked the extraordinary landscape that is Beppu, the greatest feature was the semi open-air onsen bath facilitated by the floor to ceiling windows, connected to the generous deck space It was fun to walk around the gallery space and admire the interesting architecture, color palettes, and exhibits championing Beppu landscape, flora, fauna etc. Sitting in the Peak restaurant for dinner, I was amused that one of the waitstaff was a robot that ferried food and empty dishes back and forth. Dinner was laid-back, had a window side seat that allowed me to enjoy the city glitter below.

This boutique hotel was a gift. Yes it's gorgeous, perched on the side of the mountain with stunning views and luxury accom like having your own onsen but it was the staff who really made it outstanding....Maria, Tui and everyone else were incredibly responsive and helpful...not only when due to train changes, we were 2 hours late arriving (the kitchen staff held our dinner) but also when we left a phone with our JR passes in the taxi. (which we were able to recover!!!)
